Thank you for taking the time to visit our page. Whether you are already a Southdown parent or someone who is thinking of joining us in the future, welcome from the Foundation Phase team.
We are delighted to welcome you and your child to Southdown. We hope that their time with us is a happy one. Our first priority is to make all children feel happy and secure in school so that they can become successful learners. We ensure each child is greeted as they come into school each morning. Every child is an individual and they will each be given opportunities and support to develop their skills and interests at their own stage. We work hard to foster curiosity, determination and a love of learning which will provide a firm foundation for their future education.
Parents are very welcome in our school. We value the skills and knowledge that you have and like to use these to enhance the children’s learning. So, if you have a skill that you think you may be able to share or have time that you can spare, please speak to us. Extra pairs of hands are always welcome!
Dinner money is due in on a Monday for the week ahead, this must be paid via our electronic 'School Gateway' app (£2.25 per day)
Dojo is a super way of communicating, keeping up to date and sharing the great things the children will be doing.
We try our very best to respond quickly to questions during 8 and 5pm.
Seesaw for Schools is a digital app-based platform that allows students, teachers, and parents or guardians to complete and share classroom work.
When your child starts in Southdown they will be set up with their own Seesaw account. You will be able to see all the wonderful things your child has been doing in school using the Seesaw Family app. We will also use Seesaw to set home learning tasks, which can we accessed using the Seesaw CLASS app.
Literacy and Numeracy
We use three structured schemes in Foundation Phase to support children’s development in Literacy and Numeracy.
This learning program combines creativity with basic skills and addresses the current need to:
· motivate all children to grow a love of reading and writing.
· raise the standards of spelling simultaneously with reading and handwriting.
· accelerate the achievements of children with additional learning needs.
White Rose Maths
A scheme of work that teaches children mathematical concepts through pictoral, practical and written methods in order to develop a deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths and improve fluency. Fluency in maths is about developing number sense and being able to choose and use the most appropriate method for the task at hand and be able to apply a skill to multiple contexts.
Read, Write, Inc
Read Write Inc. Phonics teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step
