Topics this Term

Our topic this term is a novel study 'Boy Overboard' by Morris Glietzman. In class we will be reading and studying the book which is centered around Jamal and his family and their experiences as they become refugees in the country of Afghanistan. In literacy we will be focusing on diary writing and taking on the role of a main character from the book. In addition, the children will be given the opportunity to participate in hot seating activities and learn how to write an informal letter. Linked to this topic, the pupils will be studying Islam in RE and Children's Rights in PSE. They will also engage in an Islamic Art topic where they will produce an Islamic Tile and D&T topic where they design and make bread (in the book the main character's father is a baker!)

After October Half Term, we will begin our Saint Lucia Topic and Healthy Bodies Science topic. As part of their Science work, the children will learn about a balanced diet and will have the opportunity to visit Tesco to take part in a healthy living trail.

Reading - 4 Reads, Reading Challenge

In Year 5, we encourage pupils to attempt to read at home at least 4 times a week. This is checked every Friday and dojos, raffle tickets and/or merit points are issued as a reward.

Can you help? Have you got any old magazines or comics that your child no longer needs? If so we would be grateful if you would donate them to us to build up a bank of reading resources for our reading time, thank you.

Homework in the Upper Juniors alternates between a Learning log task and a My Maths activity. Homework will be given out on a Friday and must be returned to school for the following Friday.

We actively encourage children to give their best when completing these tasks and would encourage you to support your child by providing a quiet place for them to complete the work and the appropriate equipment, i.e. Pencil ruler, pen and colouring pencils. Some of the tasks children will be asked to complete will be internet based, if pupils do not have access to a computer at home, they will be able to use computers in class. We also encourage children to read at home for twenty minutes each evening.
