Swimming, girls a full swimming costume and boys swimming trunks. Children are allowed to wear swimming goggles but will be expected to remove their goggles for a small part of the lesson as part of water safety training.

Topics this Term

Our history topic this term is Tudor Times. Pupils will have the opportunity to experience life as a Tudor and discover the interesting facts about life in Tudor Times. Linked to this topic the pupils design and create a coat of arms for a Tudor flag in D&T. Also, the pupils create 3D Modroc masks of a Tudor character in Art. As part of our literacy work, the pupils learn how to write a newspaper report. They then use these skills to write a newspaper report about the Battle of Bosworth. We will also be visiting Chirk Castle as part of our summer trip to explore Tudor medicine and Tudor crime and punishment.

Reading - 4 Reads, Reading Challenge

In Year 5, we encourage pupils to attempt to read at home at least 4 times a week. This is checked every Friday and dojos, raffle tickets and/or merit points are issued as a reward.

Can you help? Have you got any old magazines or comics that your child no longer needs? If so we would be grateful if you would donate them to us to build up a bank of reading resources for our reading time, thank you.

  • Read with your child and sign in their reading record at least 4 times a week, as reading underpins all areas of the curriculum.Pupils will earn a ‘Merit Point ‘every time they complete 4 reads at home.
  • Practise spellings with your child.  A new spelling list will go home on a Wednesday and then they will be tested the following Wednesday.  Your child must complete their activity sheet and put some time aside to learn the spellings that they have been given.  They will earn an additional ‘Merit Point’ for ‘Getting full marks’ three weeks running in their spelling test.
  • Learning Log Homework is designed to support what we are doing in school.  Your child will be able to choose the activities they would like to do.  They need to complete four activities from the list, by 6th of July. Pupils can present their work in any way they wish.  Your child might like to use their Learning Log, HWB/Digital or they might like to physically make something and photograph it or video of what they have done/an explanation of something. Ultimately, we would like your child to have fun and enjoy it! J
